Friends and family!

WOW! I don’t even know where to begin. I love my mission. It has been the most wonderful 18 months ever. I’m so grateful for the amazing experiences I’ve had here that have changed my life forever. We started reviewing the baptismal interview questions with our friend Jia Ying this week. She still has some doubts about prophets and the Restoration, but she agreed to pray to gain her own testimony 🙂 We are very excited about her progress. She also invited her mom to come to church with her next week for the first time.
I know that God is our loving Heavenly Father. He hears and answers our prayers. To show us the way to be happy, He sent His son Jesus Christ. It really is that simple! I love this gospel. Looking forward to seeing you all very soon!

Sherry was baptized!

Hi everyone!

Best part of the week- I got to go back to Xinzhuang and see my friend Sherry be baptized! Sister Austad and I started teaching Sherry last October! In January we had helped her set a baptismal date and make a plan to quit coffee. 9 months later and she did it! Woohoo!

Yesterday I was talking to Sloan who we first met last month. She’s been meeting with the Jinhua sisters, has an 8/11 baptismal date, and wants to go on a mission!!!! Wow! She is so full of joy. I told her I was feeling sad about finishing my mission and saying goodbye to everyone here. She came up to me later that night and said she was praying about me going home and had a really good feeling and knew that’s where God needs me next. So cool!

Hope you all have a great week!!! See you soon 🙂

Back in XinAn!

Friends and family hello!

So here’s another surprise! I only got to stay in my new area of Danshui for 5 days! Just minutes after I sent my weekly email out, we got news that I was being transferred back to central Taibei. Sister Nielsen and I were so sad when we found out we weren’t staying together for another transfer BUT we both have amazing new companions and I am so happy to be back in XinAn where I served in February- it felt like coming home! I was only able to be here for 6 weeks the time before, so I am grateful the Lord has given me the another opportunity to love and strengthen the people here. My work is not finished! and I honestly have never seen so many miracles as I have these last two weeks- can’t wait to share them with you all.

My first day back we met Pei Xuan! She first met missionaries in Australia, when she was living there to improve her English. After she moved back to Taiwan, she somehow lost contact with the missionaries and stopped taking the lessons. Then on one Sunday, she was on the MRT and saw a man wearing a white shirt and a tie. Assuming he was going to church, she followed him to our chapel! She took it was a sign that God wanted her back at church 🙂 and despite feeling like she’s not yet ready, she thinks that Heavenly Father wants her to get baptized in July. Woohooo! This is perfect timing for her because she is headed to England for school in August. We know that having the Holy Ghost as her constant companion will be so great for her as she takes on these new challenges. One of the coolest things was seeing her go up during Relief Society to share her thoughts on faith. As she was talking, tears started rolling down her cheeks. She was so confused and apologized for crying- “This has never happened to me before!” All of the relief society sisters told her not to worry, she was just feeling the Spirit! It was so neat to be a part of that moment. We are praying that she is able to overcome the last of her challenges so she can reach her baptismal date.

And then there is Sloan! So it was 9:25 at night just before we were about to head home and one of the assistants called us about a girl who was at the chapel. We raced over and met Sloan! She is one of the most prepared people I have EVER met. She walked into the church by herself because she said that she just really needed somebody to talk to and wanted to know if God was there. She’d been feeling in the dark recently and she kept saying, “You two look so happy! How is that possible?” As she was asking us all of these questions I said, “Sloan this is just so perfect because I think Sister Williams and I have all of the answers.” Her face just lit up and she said, “Really?!! Wow thank you so much.” I promised her that as she learned about Jesus Christ and applied His teachings, the guilt she felt would be swept away. She said, “Wow I really need that!” We learned later that she actually doesn’t live in our area, so we passed her off to the other sisters here. They were so excited to get such a golden investigator 🙂 They told us yesterday that she will be getting baptized in the next 1-2 weeks! So crazy!!!

The last one, because I’m running out of time, is Jia Ying! She is a member referral from another part of Taibei. She and her member friends met with us and she said that she has always admired the warm happy feeling in the family’s home. She is such a cute girl and is so open to sharing her thoughts with us. She thought a new start could help her be a better person, so she set a baptismal date for August. She is bursting with so much faith already! She has been coming to church every week and is already great friends with the YSA in the ward. She and Ling Fang, a member we we introduced her to, went out for mango shaved ice together after our lesson without us even knowing haha. Friendships are the best and are so important for these investigators.

We also had a fun meet and greet with our new mission President and his wife- President and Sister Peterson. He said that when he was served here 20+ years ago, there were only 4 chapels in all of Taiwan. I couldn’t believe it! He told us that the prophet and apostles have a huge vision for this area because these recent converts in Taiwan will serve and take care of China when it opens up for missionary work. Hearing this reminded me of the scripture in 2 Nephi 2: 6-8, “Wherefore, redemption cometh in and through the Holy Messiah; for he is full of grace and truth. Behold, he offereth himself a sacrifice for sin, to answer the ends of the law, unto all those who have a broken heart and a contrite spirit; and unto none else can the ends of the law be answered. Wherefore, how great the importance to make these things known unto the inhabitants of the earth, that they may know that there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah, who layeth down his life according to the flesh, and taketh it again by the power of the Spirit, that he may bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, being the first that should rise.”

I know this scripture is true! Christ lives and is our Savior. His arms of mercy are outstretched to every one of us, if we are willing to open our hearts to His message.

I love my mission in Taiwan!!!

Surprise! Sister Nielsen and I moved to Danshui!!! We are whitewash opening the sister area! Danshui is a 20 minute MRT trip from Beitou, further up north. It is a popular tourist spot on the coast.. Its definitely the busiest area I’ve ever served in! This is my 12th and final transfer- I was not expecting to move AGAIN but I am beyond excited to serve here. The Danshui area hasn’t had sisters in years, so the ward is just over the moon! The Bishop sent this in the ward group LINE: ” 太棒了!感謝神再賜給淡水支會2位天使來與成員一起推動傳道事工。” which means, “So awesome! Grateful that God has given Danshui two more angels who will work together with us members to push forward missionary work.” The Danshui area is on fire right now- the ward’s yearly baptism goal is 24 and they are at 12 so far! Sister Nielsen and I are so excited to help out in the work. We also get to stay STLs and work with the sisters yay!

Update on our miracle girl Momoko! We met her about three weeks ago at English class, and she’s been coming to church every week since then! She believes it’s God’s design that her new job allows her to rest on Sundays. She LOVES learning about the gospel. She takes pictures of the gospel principles textbook and volunteers to share her thoughts in Relief Society. She is awesome! Her major concern right now is that she was already baptized into another Christian church, so she wants to make sure she understands more before she commits again. Praying for her that she opens her heart to the Spirit and receives a witness of the truth.

Other exciting news… Our new mission President arrives this week! We are excited to welcome the Petersens to Taiwan. We got a final email from the Jergensens this week that I’ll share a part of below. I am so grateful for such faithful leaders who have taught me how to love missionary work.

“WE LOVE OUR MISSION IN TAIWAN! Our family has been greatly blessed because of our serving in this mission. We love the members and investigators! We love the mangos, pineapple, dumplings, peanut butter hamburgers, mango bings, bian dangs, fruit and vegetable markets, and Cocos. We love the MRT, all of the scooters, and we are trying to love the buses. We love the countdown clock at stoplights. We love standing right and walking left at the MRT escalators. We love stake conferences, stake choirs, saying Zao An from the pulpit, and the congregation responding in unison with the Chinese words when we ask how to say something in English during a talk. We love the typhoons and earthquakes. We love missionaries eating waffles in our home. We love watching missionaries contact people at spotlights, on the street, and in the MRT. We love teaching with missionaries. We love LA visits, member visits, and English Class. We love the RC testimonies and missionaries’ musical performances at the new member fireside. We love the missionary Christmas performances and Lamb of God. We love zone conferences, trainings, and interviews. We love our new missionaries, old missionaries, and all missionaries in between. Most of all, we love you! We love your faithful, sustaining support of us. We love the love we feel from you every time we are with you. We love your smiles and enthusiasm. We love watching your testimony and conversion grow. We love watching you learn how to do missionary work. We love your devotion to God. We are praying for you and for missionary work. We hope you love your mission in Taiwan. WE LOVE YOU TONS!!!”

I just want to echo the Jergensens and say, missionary work IS the best!!! Helping others learn about Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ brings so much happiness. I know this work is true and I am so grateful to be a part of it.

Quick update and lots of pictures :)

Hey everyone!

Another week has come and gone! We finished the last of our 4 exchanges…. Woohoooo! I love working with all of the sisters. This will be a quick email but here’s a cool story! so we posted a video on our English Class’s Facebook page of Sister Nielsen and I speaking English and it has reached over 4,000 people! The Lord has prepared so many people for us to find, I have faith that we will be able to bring many of them to the gospel.

“For there are many yet on the earth among all sects, parties, and denominations, who are blinded by the subtle craftiness of men, whereby they lie in wait to deceive, and who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it— Therefore, that we should waste and wear out our lives in bringing to light all the hidden things of darkness, wherein we know them; and they are truly manifest from heaven.” D&C 123:12-13.

Love you!

“Positivity is called faith in the church”

Hello! This was such a great week! We had a great zone conference- the last one with the Jergsensens!! they finish their mission the end of this month. Sister Jergensen made us all waffles and homemade caramel sauce to celebrate. Since Sister Nielsen and I are over two zones, we are excited to attend another zone conference this next week 🙂 She also taught us about trust in God. She said that a lot of the time we ask God questions that show we doubt His plan for us: “Q: Why does this have to happen to me? Why do I have to suffer this now? What have I done to cause this?” If we want to look ahead to the future with an eye of faith, we will instead ask, “What am I to do? What am I to learn from this experience? What am I to change? Who am I to help?” One of my favorite things that President Jergsensen has taught me is that, “Being happy and having a positive attitude is called faith in the church.” 💖

We also met some cool new investigators this week- one with a lot of potential is Momoko! She signed up online for our English Class, we met her on Wednesday, and then she came to church yesterday. Literally all of the talks/lessons seemed like they were designed exactly for her! She was just loving it, taking pictures of the gospel principle book and the whiteboard in Relief Society. She feels like it’s God’s perfect timing that she could start coming to church. It sure is!

To wrap this up quickly (because we are going on an adventure today!) our investigator Vivi sent us this message, which just melted my heart: 我也很開心~遇到你們給我的感覺,很開朗~樂觀~滿滿的正面能量 which means “I’m also excited, running into you two makes me feel optimistic and hopeful, like I’m full of positive energy.” What a great thing to be a 24 hour missionary and to share about the gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone who will listen. I’m forever grateful I heeded the prompting to serve a mission, Heavenly Father really knows what we need!

Only 2 months left?!

Hi hi hi!

I cannot believe it is June… the weeks are going by WAY too fast! Members and other missionaries are starting to remind me that I only have so long left, so I’m just trying to enjoy every moment here in this beautiful place. It is such a privilege to be here in Taiwan. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything!

Exchanges started back up again this week! Sister Swanson came up from Sanchong to be my comp for the day. She is in her 6th transfer and was actually MTC companions with my trainee Sister Austad. Sister Swanson and I had so much fun together! We sweat buckets, got caught in a downpour, and when we were stopped at a light, we found a big cockroach crawling on her foot 😂 it was a happy day! We also had the chance to go visit a Wu JM in Tianmu. She is a friend of a member in our ward. She came to church for the first time last week! She is around 70, and told us her whole life story while we visited with her. She shared her testimony about prayer helping her through a difficult transition when she moved here from mainland China. As she was talking, the Spirit strongly testified of God’s love. She realized she’s been further from God than she should be lately, so she accepted our invitation to pray daily. She told us she will be going to China soon and will stay there until September, but she said that she knows that she wants to come back to our church someday 🙂 little miracles everyday. I love it!

Quick spiritual thought, I read something that was really encouraging from Elder Holland the other night. “We may not be able to demonstrate yet the 10,000 talent perfection the Father and the Son have achieved, but it is not too much for Them to ask us to be a little more godlike in the little things, that we speak and act, love and forgive, repent and improve at least at the 100 pence level of perfection, which is clearly within our ability to do.” I love how this teaches us that we are capable of doing so much good! God has confidence in us to succeed in this mortal adventure and is so willing to help us in all of our efforts.

Have a good week!

100 degrees in May!

Hello!

It was a very busy jam packed week in Beitou! I can’t wait to tell you all about it!! The heat was at an all time high for May at 38C or 100F. One of my English Class students Sean sent this in our group chat when we were discussing the weather: “It’s burning hot! That’s true, in recent days was really scorching hot! The temperature of yesterday (5/27) broke the historical record (38.2 degree) of Taipei’s highest temperature in May since 122 years ago. The previous record was at 37.7 degree in May 1991. Be careful don’t be get heatstroke.” It just so happened that we also had appointments scheduled all the way up in the mountains, so we went on some crazy bike rides to try and locate people. My bike gears actually broke while I was going up a hill, so I am riding one of the exchange bikes for the time being. Fun times!

We had another MLC meeting this week. Our mission has seen HUGE success with English Class recently. Since the new website went up (taiwaneng.com) our mission has had over 2,000 people sign up and the majority of them marked that they were interested in learning more about the gospel! It is so incredible! We have been pushing Facebook use as well, trying to advertise and get the word out. Sister Nielsen’s children’s class had 17 kids last week, so I’d say we are seeing success 🙂

Right now we are working with a cute mom Ruby. She brings her little baby boy with her everytime she meets with us. We were thinking about which ward member could be her fellowshipper/friend and we thought of Karena! She is also a young mom and has a daughter named Xiao Xigua (little watermelon 🍉). Karena came and helped us teach the Restoration and then on Sunday, she sought Ruby out and introduced them to her daughter at nursery. I love being a missionary and helping others make new friends and be comfortable with the ward family. Sister Nielsen and I joked that we are like matchmakers in a way!

I’ve heard a lot of people tell us recently that they understand religion to be a 寄託 (jituo), which means a crutch in hard times or something they can fall back on when things get tough. While I think this is true, I believe that religion is so much more! It’s not only an outlet, but a way of life! As Preach My Gospel says, “Individuals and families begin to follow Christ as they exercise faith in Him and repent of their sins. They receive a remission of sins through baptism and by receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost from one who has authority from God to perform these ordinances. They then endure to the end, or, in other words, they continue throughout their lives in exercising faith in Jesus Christ, repenting, and renewing the covenants they have made. These are not just steps that they experience once in their lives; rather, when repeated throughout life these principles become an increasingly rewarding pattern of living. In fact, it is the only way of living that will bring peace of conscience and enable Heavenly Father’s children to return to live in His presence.” I know this is true and that by following the example of Jesus Christ, we are blessed beyond anything we could ever imagine.

I love you all so much 💖💖💖

New home in Beitou!

Hey everyone!

So unexpectedly, I moved to a new area! I’m back in Taibei in Beitou! It’s a city up north, very humid, and has lots of hills 🙂 My new companion is Sister Nielsen and I love her!!! We have been friends since the MTC last year, I am 6 weeks ahead of her. I feel so lucky to be here for hopefully my last two transfers. It was hard to leave Taoyuan when I did, but I am excited about all of the new people to meet and teach here in Beitou. We have been busy these last few days with unpacking, getting my bike shipped over, visiting members and LAs, teaching lessons.. everyday is so good and we are happy. That was something that we talked about in Relief Society this week that we all are searching for happiness. I love that God created a simple plan for us to find it. “But Aaron said unto him: If thou desirest this thing, if thou wilt bow down before God, yea, if thou wilt repent of all thy sins, and will bow down before God, and call on his name in faith, believing that ye shall receive, then shalt thou receive the hope which thou desirest.” Alma 22:16.

I love you all and hope you are doing well!!!

Happy Mother’s Day

Hello! Happy Mother’s Day to all of the amazing moms out there 🙂 I’m so grateful for my sweet mom! Mom you are the best!!! 💖💖💖

Cute Rosanna was baptized and confirmed this week! She was so brave and even introduced herself to everyone. Her primary teacher gave an awesome talk, we sang a song in Spanish, and it was perfect. She had so many nice people there supporting her- the best was seeing her little primary friends mopping up the wet floor in the bathroom and blow drying her hair. So crazy story! An hour before the baptism, the phone inside of the elevator rang. We picked it up and a lady asked if we had a church service that night she could come to. This Lai JM came over for Rosanna’s baptism, told us she wants to be baptized, and then came to church the next day. Oh wow Sister Lin and I were SO HAPPY. Missionary work doesn’t get much better than that. What’s funny is that stories like this happen all of the time, but each time, I never cease to be amazed by how miraculous the Lord’s work is.

As we were preparing to teach one of our mom investigators the Plan of Salvation this week, I was reminded of an analogy that one of my previous companions taught me. She likened Heavenly Father to a parent who sends His child off to school. God sent us to earth with the motivation of a parent: to see His children learn, acquire valuable skills, meet new people, and have fun. At school, there are tests, just as in life we come across challenges and hard times. God/a parent won’t just take our tests for us because where is the growth in that? He wants us to do the best we can, but we will make mistakes and get some answers wrong… none of us are perfect, but our performance on the tests does not determine God’s love for us. That is unconditional! What He wants most of all is for us to come home to him. At the end of the day, when school is done, he just wants us to come home. That is why He ask us to, “…come and fear not, and lay aside every sin, which easily doth beset you, which doth bind you down to destruction, yea, come and go forth, and show unto your God that ye are willing to repent of your sins and enter into a covenant with him to keep his commandments, and witness it unto him this day by going into the waters of baptism. And whosoever doeth this, and keepeth the commandments of God from thenceforth, the same will remember that I say unto him, yea, he will remember that I have said unto him, he shall have eternal life, according to the testimony of the Holy Spirit, which testifieth in me.”

Have a good week!

6 Our Relief Society President’s dog Heibao followed us all the way from their house for a 20 minute bike ride. She had to drive over to pick him up and he didn’t want to leave… She joked that Heibao wanted to be a missionary too haha. I’m glad this is my only experience of being chased by a dog 😅
